It’s one for my baby and one more for the road in this cocktail of jazz standards and storytelling. Tragedy, with a twist.
You Give Me Fever, the Phaedra Cabaret is filled with songs including Mad About the Boy, You’re Getting to be a Habit with Me and Fever which were made famous by legendary jazz divas such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and of course Peggy Lee. With the help of live music, the play creates a sultry tapestry of love’s eternal struggle with passion, addiction, choice and fate.
Phaedra is one of the classic tragic heroines of Greek theatre. But you’ve not heard her story like this before, complete with a twist at the end. It’s a classic tragedy backed up by some classy jazz standards and tasty cocktails.
The co-producers, Guildford Fringe Theatre Company and LynchPin Productions are committed to presenting new works by local playwrights and are proud to present You Give Me Fever, the Phaedra Cabaret, a new play in a cabaret-style by local playwright Jack Lynch.
Jack Lynch is a co-founder of LynchPin Productions Theatre Company. With Edie Campbell, Jack wrote and directed Emily Dickinson & I – The Journey of a Portrayal, which premiered at The Yvonne Arnaud’s Mill Studio and has toured the UK, Europe and North America to great critical acclaim, as did their second play Cloning Mary Shelley-a fantasia. His play Consider This…, premiered at The Electric Theatre in 2013.
Pippa Winslow (The Phantom of the Opera, Hairspray and Sister Act), will be appearing as Fey, the heroine of the story. Pippa has recently finished Buried Child at Trafalgar Studios and the UK number 1 tour of The Sound of Music. Her last solo cabaret sold out during its run at Yvonne Arnaud’s Mill Studio and garnered five star reviews.
James Shannon, jazz-guitarist, is a brilliant young talent and recent graduate from ACM in Guildford. He specialises in fingerstyle guitar arrangements boasting a large repertoire of jazz and popular standards and also enjoys working alongside singers predominantly in a jazz setting.
‘We are thrilled to be working with LynchPin on this production after seeing an early showing of it last year in Godalming.’ Says Nick Wyschna, Artistic Director of Guildford Fringe. ‘Pippa’s story telling is beautiful and incredibly engaging. Mix that with an intimate venue like The Back Room and you are set for the perfect theatrical experience!’
