Guildford Swing Jam!

December 30, 2018

GRAB your dancing shoes and prepare for a glorious afternoon tea dance at The Star Inn on Quarry Street, as Guildford Fringe bring Guildford Swing Jamto the Back Room on Sunday, February 10 at 2pm.

Guildford Swing Jamis a monthly live jazz jam for swing dancing.  It’s all about the celebration of live music for swing dance – which is brilliant for Lindy hop, Balboa, Shag and Jive.

The perfect afternoon of dancing just wouldn’t be complete if it wasn’t accompanied by a truly fabulous House Band.  And my friends, you are in luck!  A lively five-piece band that delivers jazz with a great beat for swing dancing, Katie’s Crooked Swing Band will play jazz favourites from the 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s, with a few modern classics and some special guests thrown in too.

You can expect some swing dance classics made famous by the King of Swing, Benny Goodman, such as Why Don’t You Do Right and Blue Skies, as well as favourites It Don’t Mean a Thing if it Ain’t Got That Swing, My Baby Just Cares for Me, Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gives to Me and Route 66

With heaps of experience in the jazz world, this band are sure to have you bouncing from floor to ceiling.

Katie Crooks works as a Voice, Speech, Accent and Singing Coach for numerous professional theatre companies and drama schools including GSA, Laine Theatre ArtsHurtwood House and YMT.  As well as being an Associate Artist with Lynchpin and Artifice Theatre Company, she continues to work as a jazz singer with numerous bands as well as running her own group, Katie’s Crooked Swing Band.

Katie explains: “I’ve been a singer of Jazz and Big Band for years but my other love is for Lindy Hop dancing.  One day a friend said ‘Why not just combine the two and provide some tunes for my next social dance in Portsmouth?’ and that’s how the group was born!”

You don’t need to know how to dance; there will be room for Lindy Hop dancers but even if you don’t know a step there will be loads of people there just for the music, so come on down and join in the fun.

Dress up in your favourite vintage outfits, don your victory rolls and get ready to dance until your heart’s content at their first tea dance in February.  It’s what Sunday afternoons were made for.
