We Will Survive!

January 7, 2021

As is often the case in challenging times, music is our salvation…and if Disco is our church then Gloria Gaynor is most definitely our High Priestess.

Way back in 1978, Freddie Perren and Dino Fekaris handed over a catchy little number to the Queen of Pop. The resulting record went on to sell millions, become an anthem for an entire generation and enjoy #1 billing in Rolling Stone Magazine ‘100 greatest dance songs of all time’ poll.

We refer of course to the remarkable and ridiculously catch Disco phenomena that is ‘I will Survive’.

Lately, we’ve been listening to it a lot, and as we sing-a-long-a-Gloria we even adapt the lyric slightly to reflect our attitude to what we must still refer to as ‘the current situation’.

Did you think we’d crumble?
Did you think we’d lay down and die?

Not a bit of it, we are made of much stronger stuff than ‘luvvies’ are often given credit for, we’re a tough bunch, we all face rejection and critics on a daily basis, we don’t disappear in the face of adversity…we write plays about it!

We’ve got all our life to live
And we’ve got all our love to give and we’ll survive
We will survive, hey, hey

Absolutely, thanks to the love and support of our casts, audiences, sponsors and well-wishers not only will we survive…we will flourish

And we spent oh-so many nights just feeling sorry for ourselves
We used to cry
But now we hold our heads up high

We’re not pretending it was easy, but doing what we do for a living is never easy, this rotten pandemic just made it tougher, and who knows it might get even harder yet. But we are determined and realistic, because we know that people will always want entertainment but right now they actually really need entertainment.

We will survive
Oh, as long as we know how to love, we know we’ll stay alive
We’ve got all our life to live
And we’ve got all our love to give and we’ll survive
We will survive
We will survive

So go on, fire up the record player, stick on that dusty old single…and sing your heart out!
